7-OH Powder Explained: Purity Percentages, mg per Gram, and How to Compare

The one conversion to remember

7-OH powder labels state concentration two ways — a purity percentage by weight (% w/w) or milligrams per gram — and they are the same number in different clothes. A gram is 1,000 mg, so % w/w × 10 = mg/g: a 92.8% powder carries 928 mg of 7-OH per gram, and a COA reporting 612 mg/g is a 61.2% powder. Everything else on this page — jar totals, cost per milligram, the comparison traps — is built on that one conversion.

Tablets tell you their milligrams on the box. Powder makes you do arithmetic: it is sold by weight, its strength is stated as a concentration, and two jars with identical sticker prices can differ enormously in what they actually contain. This guide walks the math with real, checkable July 2026 examples — so you can read any powder label, from any vendor, and know exactly what you are comparing.

What 7-OH powder is

7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a minor alkaloid of the kratom leaf; concentrated 7-OH products isolate it far above the trace levels found in raw leaf (our plain-English primer covers the chemistry). Powder is the least processed retail format: no binders, flavors, or per-piece pressing — just the concentrated material itself, sold in gram weights from 1 g jars to 100 g bulk. That simplicity is why powder is usually the cheapest format per milligram, and also why the label puts more work on the buyer. A tablet says "30 mg" and is done. A powder says "928 mg/g" or "92.8%" and leaves the multiplication to you.

The two numbers on every label

Every honest powder listing states concentration in one of two notations, and both trace back to the same source: the potency line of a lab's certificate of analysis.

Purity percent (% w/w) — "weight for weight." A 82.1% w/w powder means that of every 100 mg of powder in the jar, 82.1 mg is the named alkaloid and the remainder is other alkaloids, plant material, and residuals. This is the notation labs favor.

Milligrams per gram (mg/g) — the same fact expressed per gram of powder. Since 1 g = 1,000 mg, the conversion is a single step in either direction:

mg/g = % w/w × 10  ·  % w/w = mg/g ÷ 10

Worked both ways: a powder whose COA reports 821 mg/g is 821 ÷ 10 = 82.1% w/w. A powder marketed as "60%+ purity" whose COA reports 612 mg/g is 61.2% w/w — the COA number is the precise one, the marketing round-down is the loose one. When a label and a COA disagree by more than rounding, trust the COA; when there is no COA, there is no number.

Here are five powders listed live on July 24, 2026, with the published mg/g figure and its percentage equivalent. Note the fourth row carefully — it is there on purpose:

From concentration to jar totals

The mg/g figure only becomes useful when you multiply it by the jar size: total mg = grams × mg/g. A 5 g jar at 821 mg/g contains 5 × 821 = 4,105 mg of 7-OH. A 3 g jar at 928 mg/g contains 2,784 mg. A 20 g jar at 612 mg/g contains 12,240 mg. Two jars of identical gram weight are not comparable until you have done this multiplication — a 10 g jar at 612 mg/g (6,120 mg) and a 10 g jar at 928 mg/g (9,280 mg) differ by more than 50% in actual content.

Cost per milligram: the only honest comparison

Sticker price compares nothing. Price per gram compares packaging. The number that lets you compare a 1 g jar against a 100 g bag, or one brand against another, is price ÷ total mg. One fully worked example: a 1 g jar at 928 mg/g listed at $65.00 → $65.00 ÷ 928 mg ≈ 7.0¢ per mg. Here is the same arithmetic across the affiliated example lineup at July 24, 2026 list prices:

Two patterns worth noticing, because they generalize across the whole market. First, size is the dominant lever: within a single product, moving from the smallest jar to the largest cut the per-mg cost by roughly a third to two-fifths (7.0¢ → 4.1¢, a 41% drop, on the 928 mg/g line). Second — and this is the finding most buyers miss — the cheaper sticker was the more expensive milligram: at 20 g, the $749 jar (612 mg/g) works out to ≈6.1¢/mg while the $899 jar (821 mg/g) works out to ≈5.5¢/mg. Whether that flip happens depends entirely on the specific prices on the specific day, which is why the division is worth thirty seconds every time. The three comparison traps

Trap 1 — mg/g of which compound? The mg/g figure quantifies whatever alkaloid the lab measured, and it is not always 7-OH. The 715 mg/g powder in our notation table is a mitragynine powder — a different kratom alkaloid entirely — and at July 24 list prices it works out to roughly 1.7¢ per mg of mitragynine. Set next to a 7-OH powder at 5–7¢/mg it looks like a bargain, but that is a category error, not a discount: cost-per-mg comparisons only mean anything within the same compound. Read the COA's analyte line, not just the big number. (Our names glossary untangles the adjacent compounds.)

Trap 2 — purity as a quality score. A higher percentage means more concentration per gram, full stop. It does not mean better manufacturing, cleaner residual solvents, or a more trustworthy vendor — those live on the rest of the COA, not the potency line. And as the table above shows, it does not even reliably mean a better price per milligram.

Trap 3 — numbers without a COA. A purity claim you cannot trace to a dated, batch-matched certificate from a named lab is marketing copy. The verification routine is short: match the batch number on the jar to the COA, confirm the lab's ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, check the report date, and confirm the potency line matches the label. 7-OH powder is a concentrated powder in which 7-hydroxymitragynine — a minor alkaloid of the kratom leaf — is the labeled active compound. How do I convert a purity percentage to mg per gram?
Multiply the percentage by 10. A gram is 1,000 mg, so a powder that is 92.8% 7-OH by weight contains 92.8% of 1,000 mg = 928 mg of 7-OH per gram. In reverse, divide mg/g by 10: a COA reporting 612 mg/g is equivalent to 61.2% w/w. The two notations are interchangeable — vendors and labs just pick one or the other.
Is a higher purity percentage always the better buy?
Not on a per-milligram basis. Purity tells you concentration, not unit cost. Divide the price by the total milligrams in the jar (grams × mg/g) and compare that number. In our July 2026 worked examples, a 20 g jar at 612 mg/g listed for $749 works out to about 6.1¢ per mg, while a 20 g jar at 821 mg/g listed for $899 works out to about 5.5¢ per mg — the higher sticker price was the cheaper milligram. The math flips depending on the specific prices, which is exactly why you run it every time.
Does the mg/g figure on a powder always refer to 7-OH?
No — and this is one of the most common comparison mistakes. The mg/g figure refers to whatever alkaloid the lab quantified, which the COA names. Some powders sold alongside 7-OH products are mitragynine powders (for example, a 715 mg/g mitragynine powder is 71.5% mitragynine and is not a 7-OH product at all), and others are blends where the headline number is total alkaloids. Cost-per-mg comparisons are only valid within the same compound.
How do I verify the mg/g or purity number on a 7-OH powder?
Ask for the batch-matched certificate of analysis and check it yourself: the lab should be named and independently accredited (ISO/IEC 17025 is the standard to look for), the batch number on the COA should match the jar in hand, the report should be dated, and the potency line should state the compound and the mg/g figure the label claims.
